The Pilgrim was the third Brethren publication and was an attempt to combat the progressive tones of The Christian Family Companion in opposition to their Brethren policies. It began in 1870 in James Creek, PA and had a running of seven years and was published by H.B. and J.B. Brumbaugh. In 1874, James Quinter, a founder of Juniata College and editor of The Gospel Visitor, purchased The Christian Family Companion. Quinter and the Brumbaughs consolidated these papers to make The Primitive Christian and eventually ceased using the name The Pilgrim.
